Although Dong Quai is native to China this plant also has reference in the traditions of Ayurvedic, Native American and Kampo medicine. A relative to Celery and a member of the Apiaceae family, Dong Quai is a hardy plant that grows well at high altitude and loves cold, damp and shady environments. The stems grow with a slight purple tint to about a meter in height while fruiting occurs in August and produces clusters of umbrella shaped white flowers and winged shaped seed. Dong Quai takes 3 years to mature before the root is viable to be used in medicine.
